Zombie's Halloween 2 Review
Writer/Director Rob Zombie's Halloween II is a sequel to his previous remake of Halloween. This time around it follows a year later of the aftermath Halloween massacre in Haddonfield, Illinois.
I have to say Zombie's take on his 2nd time around is a bit more different then the first. This film is an eye catcher for all horror fans around. From the ultra gory splatter to the sound effects of hearing a man's head being stomped into is simply amazing. But there are ups and downs such as Myers (Tyler Mane) usage of knife slaying is controllably masterful but an equal amount of his hand use. Almost a wrestler in disguise.
Now the ideas of Zombie we still see the pieces of what he enjoys most about his horror films. You still have the feel of Redneck Hicks dishing out their fouling dialogue. The film does pay homage to the old Halloween sequels. A real Halloween fan such as myself would be able to point out. Paying tribute to the old is truly what a remake should be. But not complete shot through shot.
Zombie's reimagining Halloween is meant to be different from the original. Carpenter's 1978 Halloween is trying to achieve the idea that you couldn't just kill evil. As if evil is a planted seed just waiting for its true Shape. Where Carpenter created his shape of Michael Myers (Nick Castle). In this film we finally understand what Zombie is trying to achieve. You could kill evil but to the twist is that evil is meant to pass on. Zombie creates this idea of not born evil but to create it. For we are watching nature vs. nurture on the discovery channel. Zombie goes into psychological mind to bring out his Michael Myers. Almost evolving into something else we didn't see coming...Human. Carpenter's The Shape had no emotion to any gain achievement till Carpenter's Halloween 2 wiping out his family tree. Zombie's idea is creating the kind of mass murderer who would kill his victims and hang them up as ornaments in a Christmas Tree.
For the returning Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton), a year of rest and returning gal-pal Annie Brackett (Danielle Harris) who is scar face. With Annie's life seems normal as if what happen to her was only a dream of myth. Where the zombie like Laurie is having reimaging nightmares and later having her moments of screaming "I am Michael Myers Sister!!". And that alone speaks volumes of what we are going to expect from this film. Now the steps that Zombie takes to respect the original is where he takes the pieces of the originals to piece a different seed.
As for Dr. Loomis (Malcolm McDowell) the child psychiatrist who is not a nemesis to Myers. Their relationship was more of a tragic friendship from the beginning. Zombie was trying to show that Loomis is not the shade of gray but the almost light of gray. But as time went on of believing that Myers died from the first film. Loomis becomes this little scared punk who preys on the innocent just a make a quick buck by profiting the murders. Now in the Carpenters Halloween Loomis was more a arch-nemesis to Myers, almost a counter shield of Myers. Zombie wanted to show his arch-nemesis from what is not standing in front of you but whats inside your mind.
Zombie is not trying to create Michael "The Shape" Myers but Michael "Psycho" Myers. The characters are created in a finger twisting tension just waiting to happen. The writing is fairly good. For directors who take on remakes are always in the idea of thought that they could out due the original with a different direction. I'm not saying that Zombie out imaged Carpenter but he took his shot and the cup was half full. Not that the film is not worth the taste.
While the direction is an excellent point of view. The fan of the old or new or just simply both. I just have to say that the horror fan inside wants to scream bloody murder so go buy a ticket and have a kick ass time. Horror films are meant to be fun but this is a deeper look into what Halloween Psycho is meant to be. I just hope he wasn't trying to create another firefly family.
